It was found, that Azelaic acid posses strong 5 alpha-reductase inhibition activity in skin.
Currently mechanism of its reductase inhibition activity is unknown. Its topical action was tested on the model of acne. No studies on androgenetic alopecia are known. At combine administration of azelaic acid, zinc sulphate and Vit. B6 90% inhibition of 5 alpha-reductase activity was obtained. Azelaic acid is included in Azelex (Skinoren) - topical cream for treatment of pathological skin conditions.
It is avaluable by prescription. The price range between 20-30 USD.
Sounds interesting, is that much more effective than the postive effects of Zinc sulphate and Vit B6 by themselves? And was the Vit B6 in Pyrodoxyl-5-Phosphate form? (Sorry, chemistry nerd at work:) )
I've heard of Azelex, but never anything to do with hair, could be worth a look
